Route Description
Technical Guide:

The Muskeg river is a class 1-3 River North of Fort McMurray. The put in is located by the PTI Camp on the way to the Albian Mine site. The takeout spot is by the "bridge to nowhere" on Hwy 63 just past the Fort Mackay turnoff. The river is narrow and during high water levels (>25m3/s) is for intermediate and advanced paddlers. There are numerous rapids on the Muskeg with the largest being a Class 3 ledge. At lower water levels it drops to a Class 2. The river is navigable in canoes down to about 15m3/s. Below that level there will be many shallow spots where dragging may be required. There are some sweepers on the river, especially in the lower part. For water levels check http://www3.gov.ab.ca/env/water/ws/data/hydro/tables/ATH-RMUSKMAC-WL.txt.
