Well here is another good reason to work on your skills in WW, both paddling and rescue.
The time clock tells all, if he had been submerged......
I aways carry a breakdown saw on trips now.
When I was younger wellllll, we got lucky more than a few times.
The skills of those closest are suspect in the difficulty of getting out in a simple CIII
Keeping a safe distance apart and coming up with an alternate plan is good thing too!
I do admit getting severely trashed avoiding someone, but that was Class V (twice)
3rd time was in a IV getting someone out of a hole.....
But the internet is a great learning tool.
