I think I need to officially improve my whitewater skills this year. Are there any solo courses available in Central Ontario?

MKC (top add in the right column on the forum pages right now) does a great job but there will be others around.

I believe you can arrange solo lessons at Boatwerks in Minden.

There are also many instructors who will personalize lessons on the ORCKA site too. If you can identify where (what river) in ON I am sure you can get specific suggestions

You can also find courses at Palmer Rapids. Or you can register/go to Palmer Rapids for a series of solo whitewater clinics on their annual Victoria Day Long Weekend event. (Search for "Palmerfest" online.)

What course, instructor, or organization did you hook up with?

Do U mean Paddlers Coop in Palmer Rapids?
We did a tandem course there last year, great people and they do all kinds of styles, kayak and canoe instruction.
Heard good things about Boat Works in Minden also, we intend to try it out this summer.
Happy Paddling!

I would not recommend Boatwerks for a few reasons. First they specialize in kayaks. Maybe someone there has a canoe to paddle but they have not had any canoes for close to 10 years now. Second the Gull is not a friendly river to learn how to paddle whitewater on. Your pretty well stuck paddling the washout of the last rapid. Might as well use a pool instead...in other words not worth the money and there are better options out there IMO.

Check out Paul Masons pages.

my_self_reliance I think you are a strong enough paddler that you would find many of the generic WW lessons a waste of your time and money.
Not that the courses are not good, but are aimed at specific audiences and clients and tend not to go very far above the course plan.

Which if you are not strong or experienced they are very good.
A weekend with Paul, or someone similar would greatly benefit your skills, your mind set is something not seen in many paddlers and that makes for a quick learning curve
