For anybody interested, the 1st Merrickville Venturers took a trip down the Noire River last week from Lac Forant to the Black River Inn. This river is highly recommended. Photos of the trip can be found at http://www.1stmerrickville.ca/venturers ... /index.htm

I can see "Pinning the Whale" becoming part of the Venturer lexicon.

Can you tell me about your bug free dining shelter?

it is a Eureka VCS 16. Tarp measures about 12 x 12 and shelter about 8x8. Can also get a solid wall (net top) shelter to clip under for late fall-early spring activities. Note that it now has a solid, rather than netting sod cloth. The poles nest, one inside the other.

Very nice photo's - show the true character of the river. Glad to see the full tree strainer is gone at the Wall.

thanks Cheryl,

Do you have a link to a description or retail outlet?
If you have one...I would appreciate your opinion.

Correct identification of the shelter. There is no floor on the screen room that clips to the tarp. We won this in a Scout photo contest, and it's the first time we had used it. It works quite nice. A number of us ended up sleeping in it as it was quite the novelty.

It was actually the dolphin that was pinned :) We had just taken a swift water rescue course and were all set to setup a z-drag to get it off, when it came loose by itself. The kids had a riot with the inflatables.

VCS 16 mesh shelter....best thing ever invented.

Apparently, Eureka calls it the "Backpacker VCS" now. (Tarp & poles are sold separately.)

We have just posted the videos from our trip on YouTube; they are naturally lower resolution than what is available on our website, but the access is much quicker:

Hey great trip report, pics and videos of the Noire. My son and I are planning to run the Noire in June. I'll be picking up Hap's book tomorrow, to start planning. We'll only have 4 days for the Noire, as my son's a white water guide and has to be back at work by Thursday on the Ottawa River. We keep reading about putting in at KM 112 and taking out at KM 82, but my GPS doesn't show the KM postings, so I hope I can find a map that does. Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as neither of us has done the Noire. I have a capable 4X4, but we'll likely need to arrange a shuttle, unless someone else comes with us. Thanks again for your reports!!

I've got the Cooke Custom Sewing bug tarp. Terrific. Versatile setting options. Very well made. Highly recommended.

I'm glad to hear that feedback on the CCS screen tent, as I just ordered a 15'x15' 1.9oz one yesterday. We wanted something larger than the VCS as we have a bigger group on our Lievre trip in July.

Kingfisher,

I just purchased one from Gear Up for Outdoors in Thunder Bay. Great Service and they are in stock, now. The tarp and mesh are ordered separately and each cost just under $100.00. No poles are included, but really are not necessary if you are camping in a treed area.

It's a great set up.
