It's definitely not a hack and eventually every account will see the new banner. They want people to pay because infrastructure costs money. Photobucket at one time used to be the gold standard, now they are digging themselves into a grave.

I hear imgur is great however I hear they soon they too will also stop supporting 3rd site hosting. I myself use a gmail account to host photos.

Some words of wisdom from my brother-in-law the computer geek and internet prowler:

"The photo message on Facebook is a Photobucket image replacing your photo link with their image. I don't think Facebook cares. See here: https://www.ghacks.net/2017/06/30/photo ... ed-images/ I think Photobucket is hurting from bandwidth expenses and this is their 'solution', which may be fatal to them.

I found this site that lists 10 alternatives. https://www.lifewire.com/free-image-hos ... es-3486329 You would need to read the terms of each. For example Image Shack's free account does not allow external links after the 30 day trial expires, and they conveniently did not mention the cost of the premium account. Walk away.

While researching Google Photos, I discovered that photos from my Google Fi phone are already it their system. I did not know they were uploading my photos automatically. I don't want them doing that, so will need to figure out how to make them stop. I would only want to upload photos if I select them to be uploads. If you have any kind of Google account active on your phone it may be happening to you also. Worth checking."

Yeah I agree,
The last photo server site I used before this one, did the same thing and it died a quick online death, they not only lost the ad revenue but the users bailed, and quickly.
It is painfully slow putting pics on myccr, so on to the blog usage.
Quick and simple.

I received an email from Photobucket saying that I will no longer have 3rd party hosted photos. It will be a huge pain to redo trip reports!

If I find somewhere to host them.

I've uploaded to Panoramio but they're shutting down. I've uploaded to Flickr and was then locked out of my account for not signing in with Yahoo every day. I even contacted them and they did not respond.

I sure hope someone finds a good 3rd party hosting site. I don't mind paying since it's something I often do but Photobucket' prices are unreasonable.

I started uploading to another site with the intention of restoring my trip reports. I went to my Bloodvein report and Erica's Hayes report and my photos are there!

I did, however find this thread where a photo still shows the Third Party Hosting warning:
http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=46289

Should I bother editing my reports to exclude Photobucket?

In all my posts which contain Photobucket hosted pictures, the pictures are gone, and they are replaced with an icon which reminds the reader, "never ever use Photobucket for anything!" I am going back and replacing the Photobucket hosted pictures with pictures hosted elsewhere, which is a big huge pain in the butt.

Neil, I don't know why your Photobucket hosted pictures are still showing up, and everybody else's have disappeared. You must have good karma or great influence. But it probably won't last. if you have reports and other posts with Photobucket hosted pictures, and you want people to be able to see the pictures, I think you need to replace the pictures with pictures hosted elsewhere.

Some forums I participate I allow you to download pictures to the forum. It would be nice if this forum offered that option.

I agree and have posted many trip reports elsewhere for that very reason; the continual discontinuance of photo hosting sites.
The tradeoff is nothing is free. Changing CCR would cost money.. the other sites I am on are often running short of bandwidth and need to buy more periodically.

I have used this method to do my ccr trip reports with pictures: I write my report in Microsoft Word and insert my pictures from my hard drive. I select "compress all pictures." I save the report as a pdf and load that pdf in the trip report.
See Atikaki routes to Leyond,Pigeon etc.

Looks like a solution has been found. It’s a browser extension on Chrome and on Firefox.

Does anyone recommend other alternatives to Photobucket but free?

I logged into photobucket to download some of my pics the other day, and I was taken to a page where photobucket apologized profusely for the 400 dollar fiasco. They said that all users pics would be restored for third party hosting. I checked, and they were. They then offered a 20 dollar membership which I promptly bought. This restores many, many trip reports and map sets, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Here's a trip report from this site that has been restored.

Thanks for the update Rob!
I could never figure out why some reports were intact and others a mess.
I will have to check back in!

I prefer to use my own hosted webspace and domain, $4 - $5 a month for a ton of space for images and web pages plus dedicated email accounts. Not only will you be in full control with no surprises your links will still work if you move to a different host.

Thanks for this idea! All the other photo hosting sites I have seen are paid too!

Good thing I found a good website creator where you can host not just photos but also other files. I used hPage Website Builder (https://www.hpage.com) which is just about 5 bucks a month for everything and 5 GB storage space which is a lot!!! I needed a website of my own and a domain anyway, so I found it perfectly in time. Instead of paying for two services I am now only paying for one.

Good bye, Photobucket and Photo sharing services. Your prices and limited features will not be missed!
