Route Description
Access to Put-In Information:

Drive to Mattice, ON. The put-in is in a park on River St.

Technical Guide:

Route: Put-in at Mattice, Missinaibi River to Moose River, take-out at Moosonee. Took the Ontario Northland train back to Cochrane, where Missinaibi Outfitters shuttled our car to us and picked up the rental canoes.

A couple additional notes:

  • Be careful not to miss the take-out on the right before Hell's Gate! A friend who paddled the river the year before encountered a pair of canoeists who had missed the take-out and gone down the canyon by accident. Although they got a bit banged up, they were okay. When we went there were some orange tags in the trees marking the portage trail.
  • Water levels were quite low when we travelled, so the rapids were quite technical during the first few days. Heavy rain brought the water levels up for the second half of the trip, and allowed us to pass through the Moose River section just past the train bridge where the water levels can become impassable. When we were on the train back to Cochrane a few days later, the water levels had dropped again and we heard that a couple parties of canoeists were stuck camping near the bridge because the water was too low to paddle.
