Technical Guide:

I did this trip solo on July 15 2011. It travels many of the large lakes in La Mauricie National Park. My goal was to do it as fast as possible while enjoying the scenery. I ended up finishing in 8 hours 55 minutes.

Trip Journal/Log/Report/Diary:

Started at 7:00 AM at the Wapizagonke picnic area and traveled north on Wapizagonke lake to reach the first portage 2400 m to lake Anticagamac. Continued travelling north to the end of the lake which becomes very shallow and covered with high weeds: saw a pike swimming in the water. Continued my way out of Anticagamac toward Matawin river. The Matawin river has practically no noticeable current until the second campsite. I made the mistake of getting out at that campsite and portaging from there which adds 900 m to the subsequent 5400 m portage. I should have passed by the campsite and got out downstream to where there is an obvious wall of large rocks indicating the start of the 5400 portage. Completed the 5400 + 900 m portage in about 1 hour. The first part of the portage is steep but then it levels off. The trail is covered with overgrown trees most of the way. I followed the west shore of Lac des Cinq to the 400 m portage. This portage could be avoided perhaps in high water levels. Again stayed on the west shore of Lac Dauphinais and followed the portage to Lac Houle which was a little difficult to find. This 3000 m portage is mostly uphill and muddy despite the dry conditions. It ends beside a campsite, the only one on lac Houle. Saw a moose on the shore. Traveled north along the east shore to reach the 4700 m portage back to lac Wapizagonke. This portage was in good condition and mostly downhill. Travelled back to the starting point and arrived at 3:55 PM.
