Newfoundland and Labrador Route Information CCR provides Newfoundland and Labrador Route information in two places:
1.
Newfoundland and Labrador Routes section http://www.myccr.com/canoedb/nl.htm 2. CCR's five Forum threads and their continuations, defined below.
As well as in the Routes section, paddlers post their reports in CCR’s
Newfoundland and Labrador Trip Reports folderhttp://www.myccr.com/SectionForums/viewforum.php?f=104 I go through the TR folder several times each year and post corresponding links in the Forum threads.
Regions for filing Newfoundland and Labrador Route entries Previous choices for regions. 1. Kayak Newfoundland and Labrador uses the same five regions as Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism; the latter splits its information for “Scenic Touring Routes” as follows:
Westernhttp://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlacesToGo/WesternCentralhttp://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlacesToGo/Central Easternhttp://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlacesToGo/Eastern Avalonhttp://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlacesToGo/Avalon Labrador.http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlacesToGo/Labrador 2. Redmond and Murphy (in
A Guide to Sea Kayaking in Newfoundland and Labrador) break away from the tourist regions for the purpose of filing Coastal Routes.
3. Murphy,Price and Redmond (in
Canyons, Coves and Coastal Waters) also break away from the tourist regions, though less obviously, even for Inland Routes. They collapse the Eastern and Avalon regions into what they call the Eastern region.
CCR's requirements for paddling regions for Newfoundland and Labrador.1. By appropriate choice of boundaries,
first minimise cross-listing and
second help paddlers, especially those from outside NL, to find the information that they seek.
Coastal Routes:
The NL Tourism boundaries fail in both respects because they bisect Bonavista Bay, Fortune Bay, Placentia Bay and Trinity Bay. Cross-listing is minimised by keeping the bays intact, using points instead. With the NL Tourism regions, a paddler wishing to paddle in a particular bay (most of stick to bays; few paddle around hazardous points) would have to search in two regions.
The Western-Central boundary splits the South coast. Again cross-listing might be necessary, and a paddler might have to look in two regions.
Inland Routes:
The NL Tourism boundaries do not respect drainage basins. Again, cross-listing might be necessary, and a paddler unfamiliar with the province might have to look in more than one region. Containing as it does both routes on waters draining into the North coast and also routes on waters draining into the South coast, the Central region is especially troublesome.
2. CCR's map (in preparation) for NL requires that Coastal and Inland Routes use the same regions.
I find the Tourism regions, however convenient they are for tourism, inconvenient for filing CCR’s NL Routes, particularly Coastal Routes.
CCR's choice of paddling regions.Regions for Coastal Routes are defined by the coasts, as explained in the opening comments for each of the five regions that follow.
Regions for Inland Routes are defined by the drainage basins of these five coasts.
The limit 0f 60,000 characters per post required splitting several regions.

First, a comment on our coverage.
CCR's founder, Richard Munn, started with Ontario Canoe Routes and went national only later. Since the acquisition, we have made strenuous efforts to improve coverage of the other provinces and territories.
We must rely on the paddling community to write most trip reports, but we can help in other ways. One of our initiatives, which continues, has been to search the net for trip reports and to post links to them, as described below.
CCR provides Route information in a variety of ways. The two main sources follow.
• The Route Information stickys posted at
Canadian Route Forums & Resources http://www.myccr.com/SectionForums/viewforum.php?f=73 Click on
Discussion & Resources for the province/territory and then on the Route Information sticky for the river/lake of interest.
Once the new Routes section is up and running, we shall transfer all these entries to it.
• The
Routes section at
http://www.myccr.com/places.htm contains more formal trip reports.
The
Browse feature
http://www.myccr.com/canoedb/browseroutes.htm gets you to a map of Canada. Clicking on a Province/Territory gets you to a map with paddling regions for that P/T. Another click gets you to a list of Routes in the region. We’ll fix things, but some Routes are filed incorrectly; check other regions if you can’t find what you want.
The
Search feature
http://www.myccr.com/canoedb/searchpage.php ,
which accesses the same database, allows you to look for Routes satisfying certain criteria. We don’t find this feature so useful and shall likely change it.
You might look also at the
Trip Reports folders posted in
Canadian Route Forums & Resources http://www.myccr.com/SectionForums/viewforum.php?f=73 Some paddlers post their trip reports in the Forums, rather than in the Routes database.
I go through these Forums several times each year and post links to the reports in the Route Information stickys.
Check out the note at the head of the thread to learn which entries have already been documented in the Route Information stickys.
In the final analysis though,
CCR’s members are the most valuable source for Route information They are highly knowledgeable, highly experienced and eager to help. If you can’t find elsewhere the information you want, just post in the appropriate Provincial/Territorial Route Forum.
Route information (trip reports, links to trip reports, etc)Statement of CCR policy regarding Route information. If we can’t post the information ourselves, then we’ll try to provide the paddling community with easy access to it.
We welcome your contributions to our library of trip reports and other Route information (for example links to other sites with such information, in general just about any similar contribution to the paddling community); please post in this thread or send email to routes(AT)myccr.com .
