The coast guard has recovered the body of an American kayaker reported missing Saturday off the north coast of Newfoundland.
The RCMP confirmed the remains were found just after 2 p.m. Sunday near Eastern Island — one of the Horse Islands about 20 kilometres north of the Baie Verte Peninsula.
Sgt. Boyd Merrill said the 63-year-old kayaker was one of two men from Michigan who set out from the Baie Verte area in two kayaks just after midnight Saturday morning.
The kayakers were headed to the Horse Islands under a full moon and calm seas, Merrill added.
But the weather turned foul and one of the kayaks flipped.
Merrill said the second kayaker, a 62-year-old man, lost sight of his friend as they struggled to make it to land.
“They experienced heavy seas and high wind,” Merrill said. “They got separated in the wind and the waves.”
The 62-year-old managed to make it to one of the islands, where he activated an emergency locator beacon around 7 a.m.
He was picked up Saturday by a coast guard helicopter.
Merrill said he was in good condition and insisted on taking part in the search for his friend, later boarding an auxiliary coast guard vessel.
