Has anyone paddled the Adlatok via the De Pas and George since Coffin’s report of 1982? I heading there this Aug and wanted to chat with someone who is familiar with the route. I wouldn’t be surprised if no one has done it since 82, it looks like a very tough trip 9km portage, yikes!

I can't help much.
You almost certainly know the following but here goes anyway.
The Adlatok is sometimes referred to as the Ugjoktok, as at
http://www.battenkill.com/trip/lb.htm
Fragmentary information is available at
1. Alister Thomas. Canada’s Best Canoe Routes. Boston Mills Press, Erin (2001). Authors: James Cottrell and Bob Henderson. The latter is Bob Henderson of McMaster University, as is clear from "Every Trail Has a Story". You might contact him; I have contact information if you have trouble (I believe that he has retired).
2. Dan Murphy, Jim Price and Kevin Redmond. Canyons, Coves and Coastal Waters; Choice Canoe and Kayak Routes of Newfoundland and Labrador. Breakwater, St John’s (1996).
Hope that the above helps.
Allan

Hi Allen, I didnt get the chance to look up this info before I went. The 1:50's did the trick along with Coffins report. I didnt just paddle the Adlatok, I accessed it via the De Pas and George Rivers, traveling up the George for about 12km after portaging there from the De Pas, tough going. Im positive the Adlatok (or at least part of it) has been paddled but Im still wondering if anyone has done the route I did from Schefferville to Hopedale. I could use Bob Henderson's Contact if you can pass that along. canoeb@gmail.com is my email. Thanks!!

Under the Ugjoktok name, see Herb Pohl's article in the fall 1987 Nastawgan:

Also a chapter in his book (james Raffan, ed.), "the Lure of Faraway Places".

thanks jmc - looks like Mr. Pohl took a float plane high up on the George, then made his way down river and headed east to the border (up river) and height-of-land, then down the Adlatok. Sounds like a nice route, no six mile carry to cross over from the De Pas to the George and no two days of tracking up the George, still a fair amount of up river travel though and he still would have had a two day portage around the huge canyon on the Adlatok. Looks like Bob Henderson started way down river at Harp lake. I don't regret the route I took it was great, tough but great and no float plane cost.

That's true - on that trip Herb flew in to Bonaventure Lake on the western branch of the George.

On his Notakwon trip in 1984, which Herb began near Schefferville in Lake Attikamagen, Herb did descend the de Pas, cross to the George, and proceed upstream to White Gull Lake, then up and over to the Notakwanon.

He credits Stewart Coffin (1982) and Karl Schimek (1983) as his predecessors on the de Pas - George crossing.

Details are in his book.
