Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has any information of a route connecting Smallwood Reservoir to the Kanairiktok River. There appears to be a tributary coming out of Smallwood and feeding the Kanairiktok, but topos make it seem as though it's a smaller version of the gorge higher upstream, and would involve a major portage to get around. Anybody tried this? Alternatively, has anyone attempted the upper gorge on the lower branch of the Kanairiktok, descending from the headwaters of the George near the Quebec border?

Thanks!

Hi -

Although it is rather dated now, the late Herb Pohl paddled the Kanairiktok beginning in Knox Lake and crossing the Quebec /Labrador border. His account of that trip (with a sketch map) is available in the winter 1993 Nastawgan, available on-line here:

That trip also is described in Chapter 10 of his book, "The Lure of Faraway Places" (see Amazon).

Regards,

jmc

Its been quite a while since I was last on here . . .
Three of us did this trip from near Smallwood out to Hopedale in 2000. A major portage for the first part is an understatement.
I posted a trip report in the Newfoundland section and I see that the pictures have all disappeared.
Any questions, give me a shout.

There are a few pics posted in the gallery; this one is just entering the gorge after the portage from hell.

I copied that trip report, including the photos, back in 2010.

If you like, I could email them to you and you could upload them into your CCR Gallery.

That would be good. Hope its not a large file; I've got crappy email.
Once in the gallery, is there a way to link them into the TR without having to click on anything?

Thanks

Paul

Okay, I'll get to that first thing in the morning.

Yes, you can hotlink images as long as they are no larger than 800 pixels wide. The photos I copied from the trip report are under 600 pixels, so they can be hotlinked.

And the whole shebang can then be posted in the Routes database.

Nice to have you back, Paul.

I check in occasionally but rarely post. The site has changed a lot, I don't recognize most of the names. But I could never forget you Barbara!

Tried to hotlink from the gallery but it didn't work. My skills are limited, If I have trouble, you'll be the first to know!

Thanks

Hi Paul

Could you confirm that the email address in your profile is your current one?

I've got the photos saved. There are 24 of them, totalling around 1.0 mb.

hehehe, is remembering me a good thing or a bad thing?

I'm getting notifications on the posts in this thread so it must be ok. Not sure where to look in the profile :-?

Just found it; yes, it is correct

Thanks for the information- Paul, did you find that you could run anything in the gorge or did you end up portaging everything?

Had to go and re read the trip report to refresh my memory :D
We ran everything in the gorge. BUT :tsk: - we have been known to run some rapids that others have said are unrunable. And been successful a couple times too . If you read the trip report do not skip the disclaimer :o
IIRC there were only four or five portages on the entire trip. One of them was a brute!
I'll be updating the trip report with pictures and will try and correct some of the poor spelling and grammar, plus a couple things that got left out.
