We are doing Bowran Lakes Route the first week in July with an 7 and 8 year old( both hardy trippers). Anybody out there done this trip with kids? Also what is bug situation in early July ( in Ontario they carry us away at this time).

We did this trip last fall(last week of aug)with 3 teenage boys(10,13 ,15) by that time bugs were almost non existent we were booked in as a group so were told where to camp each night, so made for some short days of paddling ,next time I would book singles so we could go longer some days and then have a rest day somewhere. If you don,t have a good sturdy set of wheels buy some or rent from beckers lodge(great place for a real meal and ice cream after the trip,a little pricey but hey after a week of dehydrated food?)

I've heard that some sites near the end of the trip can be really bad for bugs through mid-summer. Other than that, there will be bugs, but there shouldn't be firece concentrations. Murtle Lake is much worse because most of the campsites are sandbars with swamps behind them.

We've done the trip twice with our daughter, at ages somewhat younger than yours. She had a great time. But left her pink baseball cap at a portage.

The site along the north shore of Sandy Lake is great for kids. Dry and warm, nice views, shallow warm water for wading/swimming, and an expansive beach for them to play on.

We've done the Bowron with Kids four times in 3 in Summer and 1 in Fall. All were excellent. The bugs were never a problem where we needed bug shirts more than one evening on any of the 8 day trips.

You'll love it. Take Zaveral carbon fiber paddles for the young and old. The hardest thing my little guys/girls experienced was the being tired from long days with heavy paddles. Using the lighter Zaverals makes a huge difference in their fun factor.

Also, take a Tundra tarp so you can get out of the rain. You'll be able to play cards, cook and hang out in style.

Fishing does not seem to be what it once was. Take the fat wheel carts from Bowron Lake Lodge. Do not use Becker's skinny wheel carts. The fat tires are much easier to push down/up the trails, thru the mud, et. al.

We saw a Canadian boat team with spray covers protecting their kids one year, and adopted it the next for a major increase in raniny day comfort. Pepper spray can be rented at the park. Bring fire starter material, the wood is wet most of the time. The park will make available wood around the circuit, but it is green and needs some help getting started. You'll want a fire to burn garbage, too. The bears are reported to be a problem, but we've never seen one be a problem. Keep a clean camp.... and it will be a piece of cake. Register as a party, you'll have more flexibility. If you are too large, register as two parties rather than one group (split up under two adult names). Wilth kids, it is difficult to stay on their regimented schedule of 7 days. The days can be very long, if the weather sets in and with the Group schedule, you have to move each day.... If you do end up as a group, we liked the camps made available to the morning briefing/start time better than those made available to the Groups starting in the afternoon.

Have a wonderful trip.
