Upper Straits

Definition of the Upper Straits region.
Please note that the Straits run mostly west-east, rather than mostly north-south.
CCR’s Upper Straits region runs from the top of Queen Charlotte Strait east and a bit south, to, but not including, Nanoose Bay and Sechelt Inlet.
On the north (partially east) side, the region runs from Cape Caution south and east to Egmont Point on Agamemnon Channel.
On the south (partially west) side, it runs from Cape Sutil to Nanoose Harbour.
That is, the boundary on the upper side runs north and a bit east from Cape Sutil to Cape Caution.
The boundary with the Lower Straits region runs north and a bit west from Wallis Point (Nanoose Bay), passing west of Garden Bay, continuing down the Agamemnon Channel, passing the mouth of Sechelt Inlet, and reaching the mainland at Egmont Point.
Explicit exclusions.
Southern Gulf Islands, Nanaimo area, Nanoose Bay area, Sechelt Inlet, Nelson Island, Texada Island, Lasqueti Island, Jervis Inlet, Howe Sound.

Folders for filing Route entries for the Upper Straits region.
I use six folders; in order of posting, they contain
1. Coastal end-to-end Routes,
2. Coastal Routes in Subregion Queen Charlotte Strait,
3. Coastal Routes in Subregion Broughton-Johnstone,
4. Coastal Routes in Subregion Desolation-Discovery,
5. Coastal Routes in Subregion Strait of Georgia (west part), and
6. Inland Routes.
This post contains the first three folders. Please consult the bottom of this post for the locations of the other three folders.

.

Coastal Routes
Ed note: Inland Routes are posted in post 3.

Resource
Alderson, Doug. Sea Kayak around Vancouver Island. Rocky Mountain Books, Calgary (2004).

Explicit inclusions.
Alert Bay, Blackfish Sound, Broken Islands, Broughton Archipelago, Desolation Sound, Discovery Passage, God's Pocket, Hotham Sound, Jervis Inlet, Johnstone Strait, Kingcome Inlet, Knight Inlet, Lund, Malibu, Mammalilaculla, Port Hardy, Queen Charlotte Strait, Telegraph Cove.
Agamemnon Channel, Bate Passage, Beaver Harbour, Beazley Passage, Belize Inlet, Blackney Passage, Blinkhorn Peninsula, Blunden Harbour, Blunden Passage, Browning Passage, Burnett Bay, Calm Channel, Chancellor Channel, Chatham Channel, Clio Channel, Cordero Channel, Cormorant Channel, Cougar Inlet, Denman Island and Hornby Island and Sandy Island, Deer Passage, Echo Bay, Europa Passage, Gander Bay, Goletas Channel, Gordon Channel, Heriot Bay, Homfray Channel, Hoskyn Channel, Indian Channel, Jedediah Island, Lewis Channel, Malaspina Inlet, Mereworth Sound, Nakwakto Rapids, Nodales Channel, Okeover Inlet, Okisollo Channel, Pender Harbour, Prince of Wales Reach, Princess Royal Reach, Pryce Channel, Queens Reach, Retreat Passage, Robson Bight, Schooner Channel, Seymour Inlet, Shelter Bay, Slingsby Channel, Spring Passage, Sunderland Channel, Sutil Channel, Schwartzenberg Lagoon, Von Donop Inlet, Waddington Channel, Wellborne Channel, Weynton Passage.

Caution.
Those of us with a background in lake and river paddling, even those comfortable in big water, might reflect on whether we possess the knowledge, equipment and skills necessary to deal with the very different hazards associated with coastal paddling. A course or a guided trip might be a good idea before attempting any of the coastal Routes described in the links given below.
From what I've read, every responsible paddler carries a VHF radio and is well versed in its operation.
