Lower Straits region

Definition of the region.
Waters of the southeastern portions of the Strait of Georgia and Juan de Fuca Strait, in more detail as follows.
Strait of Georgia.
The boundary with the Upper Straits region runs north and a bit west from Wallis Point (Nanoose Bay), passing west of Garden Bay, continuing down the Agamemnon Channel, passing the mouth of Sechelt Inlet, and reaching the mainland at Egmont Point.
The boundary with the Southwest region runs southeast from Gower Point to Tswawassen.
Juan de Fuca Strait.
From Beechey Head to the Strait of Georgia.

Coverage of Coastal Routes.
On the Vancouver Island side. From Nanoose Bay clockwise to Beechey Head and the boundary of the West region.
On the Mainland side. From Egmont Point on Agamemnon Channel southeast to Gower Point. Includes Sechelt Inlet; excludes Howe Sound (which is easily accessed from Vancouver, which lies in the Southwest region).

Explicit inclusions
Coastal Routes
Routes in the Southern Gulf Islands, plus Routes in the following areas: Nanoose Bay (Schooner Cove and Yeo Islands), Nanaimo (Newcastle Island, Protection Island and Gabriola Island), Cedar, Yellow Point, Ladysmith, Davis Lagoon, Saltair, Chemainus, Crofton, Maple Bay, Cowichan Bay, Saanich Inlet, Cordova Bay, Cadboro Bay, Victoria Harbour and The Gorge, Esquimalt, Becher Bay.
Inland Routes
Cowichan River, Elk/Beaver Lake, Nanaimo River, Shawnigan Lake, Thetis Lake.

Explicit exclusions
Denman Island, Hornby Island, Howe Sound, Jedediah Island, Jervis Inlet, Sooke basin.

The Gulf Islands. Information.
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
... the name "Gulf Islands" was originally intended and commonly understood to refer to the archipelago at the southern end of the Strait of Georgia—from Gabriola Island in the north to Saturna Island in the southeast and D'Arcy Island in the southwest. During the 1990s, however, the name began to be applied to all the islands in the Strait of Georgia, resulting in the introduction of the term "Southern Gulf Islands", ... , to distinguish the original "Gulf Islands" from the rest, which are sometimes called the "Northern Gulf Islands". ... Quadra Island is increasingly described as the "northernmost of the Gulf Islands".
The division of the Gulf Islands into two groups, the Southern and Northern Gulf Islands, is relatively common. The dividing line is approximately that formed by the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, and the mouth of the Fraser River on the mainland.

Wikipedia goes on to describe the terms as used by BC Ferries and Natural Resources Canada; these appear to differ from the above.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_Islands
In the following, I follow the above definition of the Southern Gulf Islands, though “Southern” is often omitted. I do not use the term “Northern Gulf Islands”.

.

Coastal Routes
I use four folders to file Route entries for the Lower Straits:
1. End-to-enders (Routes traversing the entire Lower Straits).
2. Routes in the Southern Gulf Islands (as defined above).
3. Routes on the Vancouver Island coast.
4. Routes on the mainland coast.
NB: The distinction between Routes in the Southern Gulf Islands and those on the Vancouver Island coast is blurred and so paddlers should examine both sets of entries.

End to end
Routes traversing the entire Lower Straits region.

Southern Gulf Islands
As the term is used here, these islands extend from Nanoose Bay in the north to Victoria and the Chatham Islands in the south. I include Gabriola Island but omit Newcastle Island and Protection Island; Routes in the area of Newcastle, Protection and nearby islands are posted under Vancouver Island coast, at
