Region Southwest

Begin Introduction

Ed note: Additional Route information for the region is posted in the Routes section
http://www.myccr.com/canoeroutes/461/canoeroutes
and in the corresponding Trip Report folder
http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewforum.php?f=108
I have posted Route entries for most of these.

Neighbouring regions.
Georgian Bay basin.
http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=36202
Georgian Bay coast.
http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=33994
Southeast.
http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=31542

Inclusions.
Lake Huron, Lake St Clair, Lake Erie (plus their coasts and their basins) and the upper Niagara River, from Tobermory to Niagara Falls.

Exclusions.
Georgian Bay (both coast and basin) and the lower Niagara River.

Subregions.
Ed note: I have constructed three subregions in which to file Route and Information entries, namely
Huron,
St Clair and
Erie.
In each subegion, entries are filed in downstream (counterclockwise) order.

Caution regarding paddling on the Great Lakes.
This entry, based on the Coastal Routes entry for other provinces, is included because much of it applies equally well to paddling on the Great Lakes.
Those of us with a background in lake and river paddling, even those comfortable in big water, might reflect on whether we possess the knowledge, equipment and skills necessary to deal with the different hazards associated with paddling on the Great Lakes. A course or a guided trip might be a good idea before attempting any such Route linked to below.
From what I've read, every responsible paddler carries at least a weather radio; many carry a VHF radio and are well versed in its operation.

Thoughtful, thorough article, followed by discussion; highly recommended.
