Temagami Region Ed note: Route information for CCR’s Temagami Region is posted also in CCR’s Routes Section, at
http://www.myccr.com/canoeroutes/233/canoeroutes Neighbouring regions. French. http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=33992 James Bay south. http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=36209 North Channel and basin. http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=31543 Ottawa. http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=36207 Temagami defined. 1. A loose definition. Temagami is like photography; it's hard to define in words, we just know it when we see it. But those not looking at it need something better; The Friends of Temagami help them out as follows.
2. Definition in the By-Laws of the Friends of Temagami. The Temagami Region is defined as the lands bordered by the following water systems:
the Wanapitei River to the west,
the Montreal River watershed to the north,
the Ottawa River to the east, and
to the south, Wanapitei Lake, Matagamasi Lake, Kukagami Lake, Washagami Lake, the Chiniguchi River, the Sturgeon River south to the confluence of the Temagami River, and then east along latitude 46 degrees 34 minutes 30 seconds to the Ottawa River.
The Temagami Region includes the Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater, Solace, Sturgeon River, Obabika River and Makobe Provincial Parks.
This definition recognises the existence of Trans Canada Highway 11 and the Ontario Northland Railway as integral to the regional and national transportation infrastructure.Map.
http://www.friendsoftemagami.org/canoeing-temagami/ 3. The Temagami region at CCR. But the FoT definition is not so useful for CCR, which defines regions largely by basins (river, lake, bay).
Here is what I decided.
West boundary.
Above and including Wanapitei Lake: the west boundary of the Wanapitei River basin.
Below Wanapitei Lake: the east boundary of the French River basin.
North boundary.
This has been moved north to the height of land between the basins of James Bay and the Ottawa River; a consequence is the inclusion of the Timiskaming area (excluded by the FoT because it lies north of the Montreal River basin) in CCR’s Temagami region.
East boundary. The Ottawa River (included); this is the same as the FoT definition.
South boundary. This has been moved south to include the entire Sturgeon River (tributary of the French River, the latter excluded) plus northern tributaries of the Mattawa River (also excluded).
Inclusions under the CCR definition. All Ontario waters flowing into the Ottawa River / Lake Timiskaming upstream from the mouth of the Mattawa River, plus
the Ottawa River / Lake Timiskaming upstream from the Mattawa River, plus
northern tributaries of waters of the Mattawa River, plus
the French River basin above and including Wanapitei Lake, plus
the Sturgeon River (tributary of the French River via Lake Nipissing) and its tributaries (especially the Chiniguchi River and the Temagami River).
Exclusions under the CCR definition. The Mattawa River and its southern tributaries, plus
the Ottawa River downstream from Mattawa, plus
the French River basin downstream from Wanapitei Lake.

Temagami subregions. For the convenience of the paddler, I constructed five subregions to house Route and corresponding Information entries.
Subregion East. http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=43852 Subregion Montreal. http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=43853 Subregion Sturgeon. The volume of material for this Subregion required three Sections.
Section Chiniguchi.http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=34021 Section Sturgeon.http://myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtopic.php?f=107&t=36735 Section Temagami.http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=41790 Subregion Timiskaming. Ed note: Part of CCR’s Temagami region but not of FoT’s.
http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=43852 Subregion Wanapitei. http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtop ... 07&t=43852 Each subregion is defined at the corresponding link.
