if you’re thinking about a last 7-day October canoe trip somewhere up north, then a trip down Temagami’s Lady Evelyn River from its headwaters to Mowat Landing may fit the bill. It is a short yet somehow epic journey that goes through a beautiful slice of the Canadian Shield. You probably won’t see anyone else until you come to The Forks.

A few things to keep in mind -

1. the upper stretch of the rivers’ south branch will require some work as you deal with one obstacle after another - beaver dams, bridge remnants, submerged logs, deadfall across the river, low water conditions. We spent four hours on this section from Whitemud Lake to where Jerry Creek comes into the river.

2. the portages around the various waterfalls - we did the South Channel - have some rough sections. We did it in the rain - or just after - which made the footing even greasier.

3. It is not a trip to take someone who is new to canoe tripping. It will also be a bit rough on that 40-lb. kevlar/carbon fiber canoe as you haul it over yet another beaver dam!

We had mostly cool temperatures, rain and overcast conditions during our 10 day outing down the South Branch and the South Channel below Katherine Lake; with some luck you will see the sun more often!

Day 1 - up to Mowat Landing from southern Ontario
Day 2 - shuttle to put-in on the Montreal River; paddle to Smoothwater Lake
Day 3 - portage into Apex and Whitemud Lakes; do the worst stretch of the river
Day 4 - paddle past Florence Lake outlet on down the lower South Branch of the river
Day 5 - paddle to the Forks and head down to Katherine Lake
Day 6 - down one of the two Channels to Sucker Gut or Willow Island Lake to the W end of Lady Evelyn Lake
Day 7 - paddle across lady Evelyn Lake to the east end - various campsite options
Day 8 - paddle to Mattawapika Dam portage and then over to Mowat Landing. drive home.

Maybe slot in a spare day in case things don't go exactly the way they were supposed to! A couple of extra days would also allow a side trip into Florence Lake and/or a visit to Maple Mountain on the way out.

The following post has all you need to get started - some background historical information; lots of maps, shuttle information; info on permits; suggested reading and guidebooks.
