The canoe Alberta guide has a good description of the trip. I have done it twice and you do have some put in options other than 881. You can get into the railway bridge SW of Conklin or in high water start on Christina lake and take the jackfish river to the Christina, just down stream of the RR bridge. Keep in mind once you get east of 881 in the Chrstina crossing area walking out ain't a viable option. In high water the canyon as the river drops down to confluence with the Clearwater it can be very very tricky . The first time I did it the river was very very high and we ended up lining/portaging (we found a number of the historical portages) about 14 km including 4 very high pucker factor ferries. In lower water you shouldn't have any problems. Its a pretty trip and worth doing. shoot me a pm if you need more info.
