My wife and I are hoping to paddle the William or MacFarlane to see the Athabasca Sand dunes in late June and we are trying to decide between these two rivers. I am wondering if anyone has done both and could comment on the relative merits of them.

Jonathan.

The William is not as difficult river to paddle but has a better "sand dune experience" while the McFarlane will offer you a tougher trip and some sand dunes as well. Check out Northern Saskatchewan Canoe Trips: A Guide to 15 Wilderness Rivers by Laurel Archer for more info on both of these rivers.
