My wife and I are doing the Berens from Family Lk in a couple of weeks. We regularly run II and II+ rapids as part of a group, but prefer not to run anything above CI on our own. I notice in the Wilson/Ackroyd (remarkable) book that a few CII’s don’t have portage trails indicated (notably 17, 30 and 40 in the book). Can anyone give us some reassurances that lining or bushwhacking is a feasible option if we have to on this trip for these rapids? I'm assuming that this must be the case because people do talk about going upstream!

I did the Berens from Little Grand to Berens last year using the same Wilson/Ackroyd book along with a google maps for navigation. There were a couple of portage's where the trail was hard to find because they were not marked well or because they had grown over, but for the most part the portage’s were pretty easy to navigate. We did line the canoes a couple of times because it was simply the easier option. The trip was a blast! Have fun!

I travelled up the Berens from Lake Winnipeg to Little Grand Rapids. It was a joy go up. Portages were easy to find going upstream and in good shape. I used Wilson/Ackroyd as well, also Berard's map. Some beautiful spots along the river.

Some of the portages may be easier to find from the downstream end but they should all be there.
Higher water this summer than last.
It's a wonderful river, enjoy.
