Hi, so I had a few inquires about options or ideas to finish a trip on the Hayes river cheaply, and without coordinating in advance with others.

How popular is this route? How often is a canoe group arriving and finishing at York Factory? Would it be an option for a solo tripper with a folding canoe to simply hang out for a week and see who's got an extra spot on a flight to Gillam? To divide costs. Is the route popular enough that I could count on parties arriving? I suspect it's not as traveled as the Missinaibi in Ontario.

Is there a spot to camp and wait that's protected from bears, I recall seeing pictures of a fence in area around the historic structures? Are there people around, a full time employee?

Basically it's not really in my budget to fly out on my own personal plane, and I'm willing to be patient - just wondering how realistic that is.

So another option, I wanted to ask about is this: has anyone done this route: gone up the Fox River, and crossed over from Atkinson Lake to Kettle Lake and down to Gillam? I got that suggestion from an old book and wondering if I could count on the portage trail being there, between Atkison and Kettle. So that's another option I'm considering as I'm in more control and it's cheaper to finish there.

Would probably finish this trip mid-late Sept, so I'll be arriving a bit later in the season, perhaps I'll have missed the majority of canoe parties for the wait and see idea.

Thanks in advance,

Waiting to split a flight would most likely not work. You'd be better off contacting Gillam Air to ask if anyone is travelling in a group that could add you and split costs. Do the same with Clint Sawchuck at Nelson River Adventures. He runs a boat shuttle to York Factory. It's more expensive to rent the boat than charter a flight but more likely that he'd have space for you.

Chris - username Rappi - paddled the Fox but downstream. Might be worth sending him a PM.

Mid September sounds too late in the season to wait and hope to piggyback & share the cost out.
I concur with Neil's suggestion of contacting air and boat charters in advance to see if you can prep arrange to share/split a charter.
Could also try an internet search as often there are long distance groups paddling the Hayes with websites.
Lastly often where there is a will there's a way or route without utilizing charters. Do more research into your fox to Gilliam idea. .

Great, thanks for your thoughts. That's sort of what I figured, but just wanted to get some feedback. Will check with Gillam Air and look at other options.

Thanks

Guess there is no parks people at York in September, so no fence and save camping.
Gillam Air uses their Chessna for the job so it´s hard to share a flight even with a folding canoe.
11 years ago we´ve flown in the short distance from Gillam to Atkinson Lake and paddled to York Factory via the Fox/Hayes. The Fox is the much larger river and more flow so travelling upstream would be tough.
The Kettle River/Atkinson Lake Route would be visible but involves some long carries.
Going upstream I would choose the Hayes. With a folding canoe you be able to fly in/out scheduled with Perimeter. Oxford Lake, Shamattawa, Cross Lake etc.

Hi Jay Barn,

Can you share what you find? I'm looking for return options as well as I was considering this trip for the end of August.

Thanks
