Friend from Thompson sent me this.
Two young paddlers dumped on Hayes, lost boat and walked out to Gillam!
Very scary! Either they were unlucky or just plain dumb. regardless this is a good lesson on being prepared, for us all.

so true.
I friend of mine says "when you need a Sat phone you need a Sat phone."

InReach is the gold standard for messaging in the Backcountry. Easy to use when paired to your Smart phone.
However there has been two times in recent years on trips with an inReach in use a Sat phone would have been much quicker to sort stuff out and get immediate answers. As my friend says: "when you need a Sat Phone.......

' they had left so much of their gear at the crash site to keep their backpacks light. '

I know it's Manitoba, but someone should send them this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjLBXb1kgMo

Need a Sat phone? Nonsense, they made it out all right. Just a little bit more of an adventure. Call the tune, pay the piper, and they did.

Scott Robertson beat me to it: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/ ... -1.4269352

I love that the CBC was willing to publish his description of 'this canoe, this Mickey Mouse, ratshit canoe'
