Browsing through the topo maps I spotted a variety of portages marked around these lakes along the Grass River. Has any ever traveled this area? It's off the usual beaten path of the Grass River Rote and the lakes look interesting. It looks from the map that there may even be a loop route possible, portaging between lakes north of Iskwasum and then back down the Grass.

A great question. I love looking at maps!
Have you already looked at Real Berard's canoe route map?
Is there anything in Gahlinger's Northern Manitoba From Forest to Tundra book?
What about the Flin Flon book, Canoeing The Precambrian Edge?

I have traveled in that area a bit and have looked for some of the trails marked on the topo maps. Most are pretty much non existent. Some maybe most were destroyed by fires in the 80's I believe.

Thinking of maybe heading up later in the summer with wife and dog. I was looking at the portages to get away from the more heavily used areas.
Thanks for the heads up on the fire. I had suspected that only those still used by trappers and ice fishers would still be discernible. I found a few on Google Earth.
