Moisie River Trip Report
September 7th-October 4rd 2012

(austindanicic@gmail.com)

Nights on Trail: 19
Start: Paddled out De Mille Lake, 18km east of Labrador City, on September, 11th 2012
Finish: Highway 138 Bridge, 10km upstream from Gulf of St. Lawrence, September 30th 2012
Distance: 450km (280 miles)

Route Description:
The Moisie River is rightly called the ‘Nahanni of the East’. The river held beautiful scenery and amazing whitewater throughout. The height of land portages from DeMille Lake to Lac Menistouc were straightforward (very marshy/boggy). The water levels were a little low during the first part of the river (out of Lac Felix) but fine otherwise. There were hundreds of waterfalls throughout the river still pouring water in and it was the middle of September! Our group consisted of two canoes with bow and stern flotation and one completely open boat. We did a lot of portaging, full spray decks would have lent themselves to more rapids run. That being said there is a ton of huge waterfalls that you’ll be portaging regardless. This trip could be completed much quicker, we were only on the water for 4-6 hours a day. We only saw one other group of paddlers on the river.

Logistics:
Drove from Minneapolis to Labrador City in one car with a canoe trailer (3 canoes). Dropped everything off at the put in at DeMille Lake, Labrador. Drove the empty trailer and car back to the Labrador City Train Station. Car and Trailer shipped down to the town of Sept Iles, Quebec ($700 CAD). Hitched a ride back to DeMille Lake.

Took out at Highway 138, called a taxi to bring two of us to the train station in Sept Iles ($60 CAD). Picked up car and trailer, drove back to Highway 138 bridge and collected everything.
