Last month my brother and I spent five days on the lower Ottawa River, specifically the section from Fort Coulonge to Ottawa. We had paddled down the Coulonge from its headwaters right to the Ottawa River and figured that since we were there we may as well keep going downriver.

While canoeing this section of the river will never be mistaken for a wilderness trip (except for the afternoon we spent in the Rocher Fendu stretch), we still found it a rewarding experience.

It was our introduction to a part of Quebec/Ontario we had not travelled before. To do even a bit of a river that figures so prominently in the early history of Canada by canoe was special.

One thing we were struck by when planning this little add-on was how little info is out there on this part of the Ottawa for canoe trippers. We’re hoping this series of posts will add to and bring the file up to date! Any additions and corrections would be appreciated – and added to our posts.

Canoeing The Ottawa From Fort Coulonge To the Rideau Canal - Introduction, Maps, Planning Info.

Day 1: The Rocher Fendu Whitewater Section. Info on the different choices facing canoe trippers. We picked the Middle Channel.

Day 2: Rocher Fendu To Portage du Fort ...a 700 m alternative portage to the 2.8 km one detailed at the Ontario Power Generation website

Day 3: Portage du Fort To Baie Du Chat/Arnprior … finding campsites can be a challenge!

Day 4: Baie du Chat To Baskins Beach … a 600-meter alternative portage to the 8.5 km portage outlined at the OPG website. Our experience makes us wonder who comes up with these portage routes for OPG!

Day 5: Baskins Beach To The Rideau Locks in Ottawa. info on
portages and runnable rapids in the stretch from Deschenes Rapids to the Rideau Locks

On top of everything else, it has given us a reason to consider the upper reaches of the Ottawa for a future trip, maybe starting all the way back in the town we grew up in – Rouyn-Noranda in the Abitibi region. The Kinojevis River flows past the town on its way down into the Ottawa, which then continues onward to the top of Lake Temiskaming and Notre Dame du Nord.
