Anyone have a good source for info on old portage trails? I do have a so-so copy of Ganong's elusive Map 12. I'm looking at the old 15 mile trail from the Saint John River in Bristol to the South Branch Main Southwest Miramichi. Basically, I know it follows Route 107 now and my portage cart will work dandy. But put-in and take-out aren't too clear.

Apparently the put-in on the Miramichi is somewhere around Foreston. I do not know the exact spot.
At Bristol you could take out at the mouth of the Shikatehawk as there is a path that leads right up to the road.

Are you planning a trans-N.B. trip similiar to your Flight from Quebec?

Matt H, if you contacted the owner of this site....
http://www.geocities.com/yosemite/rapids/5189/ you would likely get some insights into the info you are after or be referred to someone who can help you. The canoe folks from NB are usually very helpful.

You could also try contacting the folks here.....

All the best with your trip.

Hey Hal,
Did you ever find the put in at Foreston? If so how was the paddling to Half Moon?

According to the map it looks like you could put in where Rte 107 crosses the South Branch.

My buddies and I are thinking of putting in at Foreston on our trip this upcoming Spring.

Any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Tom

Arr! It's funny to see a reference to that website, as that is the very fellow I planned to paddle the Miramichi with! My plans were to hop from one trip to the next, figuring if I could do 60 miles of the Saint John in two days, I could link trips and make it from Fifth St. John Lake in Maine out to the mouth of the Miramichi.

It did not work out, as the water levels were all wrong, and Geeze, thosedams on the SJ! So I drove from Saint Francis to Mount Carlton and we did the Nipisiguit from source to sea.
