Ancient Portage Trails Volunteer Days!

Canoe Kayak New Brunswick is thrilled to announce its upcoming Ancient Portage Trail Volunteer Days from October 20th to October 23rd, 2018. This event is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to a project that has been named a finalist for the 2018 Candian Tourism Awards!

Canoe Kayak New Brunswick has been working to restore six New Brunswick Ancient Portage Trails since 2008, and there is still work to be done. We need your help to transport and install boardwalk materials at various points along the Cains River - Gaspereau River Portage. In addition, the trail requires trimming for eventual signage installation.

The Cains-Gaspereau Portage is an 8km portage trail that was traditionally used to connect the St. John and Miramichi River systems. This trail has borne witness to its fair share of history. In 1910, preeminent historian and scientist W.F. Ganong had the following to say about the Cains-Gaspereau Portage Trail:

"One of the most interesting of the features of Cains River, and one which will remain of interest to people of New Brunswick as long as they care for their history, is the ancient portage route which connected this [The Cains] river with the Gaspereau, as a link in the most important route of travel from the Miramichi to the St. John waters"

If you could spare some time on any of the dates from October 20th - 23rd, 2018, your help would be greatly appreciated! To sign up or request more information contact:

A literal mind is a little mind. If it's not worth doing to excess, it's not worth doing at all. Good enough isn't.  None are so blind as those who choose not to see. (AJ)
