Just another note on GBL re trip timing. Historically the lake is sposed to be favourable for weather until around the end of July and then all bets are off in August. This was our experience. We had a few days of absolute glass in the first week of August then the wind and waves picked up making getting on and off the water a challenge. We had 3 weather days in the second week and a number of days with only a few hours of paddling.Spraydeck reduced windage etc.
Fishing gear-the trouts are delicious and numerous.
Manitoulin Island has a presence and provides a great view in the changing light conditions
Some interesting descriptive articles are available online thru the DFO library
(dfo-mpo.gc.ca (search for Great Bear Lake)) about survey and the european history etc.
Enjoy your trip

Thanks for the information. We plan to put in late July, so maybe we will get good weather.

I know a Wanapitei V2 group went up the Great Bear river in 2012. I haven't saved the e-mail that said how long it took, but I recall the leader telling me it took longer than they had planned and that they had to adjust their trip because of it. The leader I corresponded with was Shauna Kearns. Perhaps you could contact her through the camp.

A brief note on p.25 here:

indicates they reach Deline on day14.

Thanks JMC!

I was able to reach Toban Leckie through Camp Wanapitai. For anyone else reading this thread: He said it took him 12 days, and they paddled to Deline and spent two days there before heading out of GBL via the Camsell River.
Regarding the Great Bear River, he said it was relatively easy to line along the shores even though it was bouldery. He said they were only able to paddle the first 8km up stream. They walked the remaining time.
