How does your flood alarm work?

its a motion sensitive portable computer alarm - I put a stick somewhat above water level, with a light line tied to the stick and run back up to near my tent, and tie the line to the alarm - if the water rises enough to float the stick, it tugs on the line and sets off the alarm. Its quite loud, and gets louder the longer it is running. it has two settings for sensitivity - I used the most sensitive one. The same alarm can be put on your food pack and will go off if an animal moves your pack or the alarm. I used it once as a perimeter alarm, just running my line in a circle around the tent, about a half meter or so above the ground - if anything hits the line, the alarm goes off. its best to not hang this alarm on the line, as a wind can move it and set it off.

Can you post a link to one of those motion sensitive portable computer alarms? They sound like a good idea.

I remember getting up to pull canoes higher. Water levels can raise incredibly compared to my locale.

I too would be interested in more information about your alarm and it’s setups.

I’ve used critter gitters motion alarms for food packs.

Also how do you like your 150 Pakcanoe?

wow, that's a long link - its for the one I have - FJM Security SX-776 Cable Lock alarm - simple enough to set and cheap enough - takes 4 LR-44 batteries.

I really like my Pakcanoe - pilots like them too, since they don't have to tie them to the floats. Its my third trip with the boat - Did the Wind/Peel rivers in Yukon, and the Yukon River with it. handles big water well, even if it isn't the quickest boat.

That’s a great alarm concept—changing water levels or animals (food pack) or even with more work and equipment maybe a perimeter alert system.

I’m a Pakcanoe fan (tandem) but I have little Pakcanoe solo experience. Glad your 150 has worked out well for you.

That was great Mattt! Thanks for putting it together. I'm a bit surprised at how busy and organized everything seems at the camping sites. Not something I would have expected. Have you done similar write ups for your other big trips?

Martin, there is a similar report for the Wind/Peel river trip I did in 2016 out in the Yukon Trip reports folder - if you read that, you'll see why I rigged up a flood alarm.
