Four of us are planning on paddling a section of the Back River this summer.
We fly out of Yelloknife on July 7th and will return to Yellowknife 2 weeks later. We originally had 6 people, but 2 had to back out. If anyone is interested in joining us please contact me at petawawa@hughes.net. We are planning on using 17 ft PakCanoes on this trip, which allows for a substantial cost savings.

Some unrequested, interfering advice:
1. Don't start above Jim Magrum. Several people have told me that the stretch from Sussex to Jim Magrum is very tough, requiring much lining, wading, dragging and portaging.
2. Play to finish at mission island. It's a beautiful spot and there's more than a little touch of history. If you do, you might want to contribute a book or two to Rob Perkins' library.
3. You might want to read Tammarniit (sp?), Mistakes before heading out. One chapter deals with the Garry Lake famine.
4. An aside: Malley Rapids is incorrectly marked on the topo, as first (to my knowledge) pointed out by George Drought. It is about 15 km downstream from the marked location.
Sorry for the noise from the cheap seats.
Yours in paddling, Allan

Allan, Thanks for the info. I will pass it on to the rest of the group.

Anybody ever consider being extracted from the Hermann River strip north of Baker Lake where it meets the Back? You'd have to make your way south from Baker, so going back to Yellowknife to retrieve cars, etc., would be awkward. Folding qajaqs would be optimum. I forget the name of the German qajaqer we picked up in 1994 after he lost his way on Garry Lake and set off his illegal ELT, triggering a $60,000 CC-130 Herc search out of Winnipeg. He didn't pay for the Herc, but he did have to pay for the helilcopter pickup from Baker Lake--about $2500 then. Probably twice that now. Lost all his gear as there wasn't time to pack it in the chopper--they were low on fuel.

Hi Thelon:
Don't know how I missed your post.
George Drought's Back group was picked up at the Hermann in 2003.
Regards, gg
