I managed to bang or press my viewfinder, on a new camera last trip out. It is psychedelia full-time now. Maybe I should have an outdoor P&S that I won't ruin. plus I like the idea of it hanging on my thwart at the ready for picture #1,257 of a white ridge in Killarney.

both cameras are 12MP, 5 x optic, kill proof, about $330.
the Henry's Camera expert seems to favour the Olympus because of history, but the Nikon is a bit narrower, and comes with a nifty free floating strap saving me $25 (waterproof or not, I could still lose it -- ker plunk!). I assume, perhaps wrongly, that Nikon would have a superior lens. Although both have good HD vid capabilities, it isn't important to me. I cap out at about 1 bell and 2 whistles, so features aren't vital.

what sayeth the camera experts here?

Which Nikon?

Do not forget about the Pentax Optio.

- thanks Brian, it was Pentax I was looking at, not Nikon at all, sorry
the Pentax W90
I did a quick scan of reviews and the Panasonic seems highly rated, although most reviews stressed the underwater capabilites more than other issues vital to me.

I use the W80 - no complaints so far. It has more bells and whistles than I have had time to learn or quite likely will ever use. The big things are it is waterproof and shockproof. The only thing it doesn't have is zoom in movie mode.
One feature that did catch my attention over other cameras is, as the literature states - "It has exceptional coldproof performance for reliable operation at temperatures as low as –10°C."
Its a recent purchase, so I have not used it at these temperatures nor have I taken any under water pictures or movies. Time will tell.
Check Ebay - there are many listed for $150 - $200 US, or less if you wait and look often.
The only difference that I could tell between the W80 and the W90 is the latter can be dropped from a little higher and taken a little deeper under water - and the colours are different.
