I noticed this last year at this time when searching Craigslist for a used Grumman square stern. Maybe it is a phenomenon local to the mid-Atlantic region, but come Labor Day weekend there are suddenly a dozen Grumman 17’s, mostly double enders, in good condition for $200 +/-. I could speculate on the reasons why, but if anyone is looking for a reasonably priced Grumman as a no-maintenance cottage boat or motor craft this be the time. |

I have also noticed this lately on Kijiji. Maybe not quite that cheap but cheap nonetheless. They really are great canoes, not sure why they get the boot on the cheap. D |

Probably coz they last forever... I remember buying a Toyota Corolla maybe 20 years ago, and the salesman said "You'll get tired of this car before it wears out..." , and I did... ![]() ![]() |

I think the Labor Day abundance is end-of-summer timing. Another summer gone by without the old Grumman moving from the yard; time to wash off the leaf litter and sell that thing. I do see Grummans and other aluminum canoes more occasionally throughout the year, but never in the $200 range. Checking the 100 mile driving radius Craigslist there were suddenly 4 or 5 non-beaters in that price range. Square stern Grummans (and etc) are more rare. I’m still ISO a 20 foot square stern for motor use. |

They sell for $700-800 up here in Manitoba all summer long. Which likely explains why Paddle Manitoba had several stolen a few years back. We have to keep our canoes somewhere less obvious now but it has made running our regular paddle outings a pain in the butt as we have to bring the canoes along from storage each time. |

Grumman used prices are all over. Someone wants over a grand for a used square stern in New Hampshire Otherwise 300-450. Not that many either. |

Someone in my neighbourhood had well used a 15 ft on the front lawn for "practically any offer" a few weeks ago. I really couldn't justify adding it to the fleet even for $100-200. |

You could have an entire fleet of used Grummans for the cost of a new boat! |

Who is buying a new Grumman when barely blemished cottage tincans are available for short change? Hoisted on their own un-killable petard. |
