View topic - Polar Bear Safety

For those canoers who canoe on rivers near Hudson Bay. Nelson, Hayes etc. What do you do to stay safe in regards to Polar Bears. Is there any good sites or people to contact for information. I am travelling up there in late summer of 2005 and am not worried about it but want to be armed with the correct information. Thanks for your help.

Oh my God! My kids ate a cookie in my tent! Now what do I do? I should think that buying a new tent would be over reacting just a tad. I could always put it away wet. That should mask any food odors...

Carry bear bangers, capsicum spray and a 12 gauge shotgun in case of absolute emergency. Keep a clean camp. Practice the triangle camp setup.

Hmm, forgive me for sidetracking a bit here but, ah, what is the "triangle camp setup?"

tent in one place, food preperation 100 yards away, food storage the same in the other direction, in the shape of a triangle.

Ah, thank-you, that makes a great deal of sense, we do something like that but our foodprep/eating spot is probably way closer to our food storage spot than 100m, I can see why it should be seperate though.

I've seen reference to small portable electric fences, similar to the kind used for keeping cattle penned in. It's an interesting approach. I also know some northern communities will rent you dogs that will alert you to a bears presence. I participated in a trip in the late '70's that used dogs. They did alert us to bears, when they weren't eating lemmings anyway

In a group or solo, I'm not sure I could sleep on a trip that involves a chance meeting.
