Help! I am looking for a short story that I read in high school that I can't seem to find any trace of online. Although I did find someone else online looking for the same story. Their synopsis is pretty bang on so I'll post it here: It was about an old man who falls and breaks his leg while alone in a remote mountain area. He is sitting at the base of a tree waiting for someone to find him when a grizzled old wolf approaches. The man is afraid at first, but then, half delirious, he begins to imagine that the wolf is his long-dead dog. Eventually the man coaxes the wolf into snuggling up with him. The story ends with the two bodies being found frozen in the snow (with two very different interpretations) to the final scene.

Does this sound familiar? I know it's not Jack London's 'To Build a Fire'. Nor is it Jack London's 'Love of Life'.

Your best guess is appreciated!!!

Sounds interesting! Shades of "The Tree" by Grey Owl (Archie Belaney)

Hope you find it!

Might be "Death in the Woods" by Sherwood Anderson, though that is about a woman dying at the base of a tree, and the dogs crowding round...
Edit 15 minutes later: now that I look again at your description, I see I'm way off...Good Luck with the search!

Hi Marlowe, did a quick Google search and came up with the following link (below). One fella says its called "Death Hunt" - appeared in Readers Digest a few decades ago... You aren't the only one looking for the story, the guy who posted the link below was looking for it back in 2000.

Hope this helps you find it
