Maybe I am missing something but it appears from the picture of the canoe that the main damage could have been fixed with half a meter of decent duct tape. I have fixed worse damage than that and made it out. But of course there may be damage that does not show in the photo.

watch that video on the cbc page and you will notice they already used all the duct tape they had to fix the canoe seat.

that canoe was in really really bad shape before in even made it on that river.

I think my first reaction would be to burn that foam in the canoe with a burning coal or something and attempt to kinda melt the foam to the boat. some screws and a small piece of wood to hold the broken piece in place would also come handy. then maybe find something plastic to melt and stick the broken piece of canoe back creating as much of a seal that i could... and then some duct tape to finish it all off.
Then find a way to canoe back-words because first rock that thing hits, its coming apart again.

if they had managed to put the canoe back together what would have been their best option? turn back or continue forward?

I think we still need to find out what the heck kind of outfitter would give them that canoe. I cannot believe they brought it with them from Germany as suggested by someone.
