It has been put forward to the WCA board, just waiting for the wheels to turn. For those that don't know, WCA (Wilderness Canoe Assoc.) owns myccr. Jeff |

Something to be said for the way it is too. The 'easy' comes at a bit of price. |

For those in Ontario or interested in that area, Ontario Backcountry Camping is a pretty good facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/822052151232319/ And Ottawa Paddlers is a good local group https://www.facebook.com/groups/615383741961486/ |

Joco If the WCA wants to have a facebook page go for it. As a partial or full replacement for this board (or the whole site)? Hopefully NEVER. This site has been through a few changes over the 20+ years it's been around but converting it to some sort of social media site would simply be the end. |

Personally I'd rather see a mailing list than a facebook group or this site. The one benefit I could see to a facebook group is that you'd get a lot more people, but that may not necessarily be a good thing. I've posted this in the past - a mailing list I created for those who enjoy the outdoors. Currently only a few mails a week on it but would love to see it grow a lot bigger than that! http://lists.barleyment.ca/mailman/listinfo/outdoors |

There is an Ontario Canoe Tripping group active and membership has really taken off. I don't see that group as a replacement for this forum in any way shape or form. The organization of these forums, the accessibility of discussions going back well over a decade, and the depth of knowledge here is not replaceable by a Facebook group which has a news feed that somewhat resembles a "stream of consciousness" where things are easily forgotten. For those who are interested in a Facebook canoe tripping group, here is the Ontario Canoe Tripping group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/753468378008715/ |

It is a good idea, as a way to encourage those that join that page add some good content here. In facebook world there are a lot of short comings and using their search function to find past posts is an effort in futility at best. Bigger trouble many facebook members don't join organized groups through paid memberships. What is going on now reminds me much of what on in the 80's and insurance woes. Tons of "clubs" but then the insurance/liability crunch hit the fan and people just stopped leading trips/outings where they could lose their shirt. Bring on the mid 2000's and with social media it has taken off again. It is great for paddling in general because paddling is much more visible now making it easier for lobbying efforts. In some of these new groups I have seen some questionable practices and it is not a matter of "if" but "when" the #$#$# hits the fan again. The content/information here is second to none and you can get real answers with out getting multiple responses that certain low end equipment is the bestest in the world. ![]() Then there is the time spent trying to weed out the trolls, I admin a few pages and I actually check their pages. You would be amazed that some of the more "famous" pages have accepted "friends" from some pretty sketchy "people" which have no interest in the activity. Then you have the ones when they post have more #'s than content with the goal of directing them to their page. ![]() So lots of issues to sort out, but it can be a pain. Jeff |

I'm not on Facebook for a whole host of reasons. The myccr site is easy to navigate and very well organized. Archives are readily accessible as well. In my view the world would be better off with less Facebook, not more. |

Yes, what he said ^^^ The search function here is so valuable. Almost impossible to search FB and get the same answer twice. |

I have no problem with FB in general and use it plenty. I've used some of the FB groups and don't think they're a replacement for forums such as this. The FB groups are great for sharing quick pics and quick shallow posts (don't mean that disparagingly) but don't lend themselves to a more organized conversation, IMO. Alan |

Being able to search the archives is invaluable.. FB algorithms are set up so it's extremely hard to search for past posts. Plus the WCA I don't think wants to feed into data collection. |

Just an FYI that the WCA does already operate a Facebook group, here: https://www.facebook.com/WildernessCanoeAssociation/ This topic will probably get discussed at the next WCA Board meeting, in September. However, myccr.com actually has its own Board with separate responsibilities. I can promise that someone will make sure it is discussed. |

My guess is many MYCCR members prefer this forum to Facebook. |

This forum is relatively clumsy compared to more modern tools, but I can't see it being replaced by facebook. Just the fact that you can search the archives here is incredible - facebook doesn't have the same capability. The way this forum is divided up into sub-forums cannot be done on facebook. Mind you I think it goes over the top a bit for the amount of traffic we have - there are too many forums here. But they do seem to make sense for the most part. I am very active on some of the facebook forums but this is where the real expertise is. |
