Wow, tragic. Watched with the expectation of the sentence being ridiculously over the top, but it was not.
Not sure if it's more about reckless endangerment of a child or impaired canoeing. Even if he had been sober, what a horrible idea.

Impaired operation of a vessel causing death & criminal negligence causing death. It was tried in a lower court, so it wil be appealed while Mr Sillars is out on bail w/ alcohol & vessel operations prohibitions.
Could an impaired canoeist get charged? Yes, but the police would probably rather target motorized vessels.
There's many lessons here. Education & common sense could have prevented this.
