Hi Folks

Looking for a recommendation for a cedar canvas canoe repair. It's old, the canvas is peeling away, and while I'd like to tackle the job myself I think I better just let the pros handle it.

Coming from Windsor area but happy to haul my boat to wherever a person would be happy to tackle the job. Preferably somewhere this side of Thunder Bay ha ha.

Thanks

LOON ECHO BAY PADDLER,

While I don't know of anyone down Windsor way- Michigan Peninsula may have a few but with borders closed...

You don't specify the repairs needed beyond canvas. Is that all? If so, with a little bit of work you can replace the canvas yourself and fill and paint it. There are resources on line or better vet get a copy of Mike Elliott's "This Old Canoe".

There are a number of wooden canoe repair specialists in the Muskoka/Algonquin/Kawartha
area:

Dick Persson of Buckhorn Canoe boat@buckhorncanoes.com
Muskoka Canoe Works Dan 705-783-4045, Becky 705-783-508
Lone Pine Canoes lonepinecanoes@gmail.com
Cook Craft: Brian (705) 349-1509

That's a start. Another resource you want to check out is the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association- WCHA- website and forum for help. They have a list of builders and repair shops.

Cheers! Let's keep the cedar canvas canoes on the water!

Bruce

Hey Bruce! Can't you see that I'm trying to be lazy here? Ha ha

Thanks for the list. I'll try and get a touch with a few of them and then see what happens. Perhaps you're right and I should try and tackle it myself.

Try this list of builders. The Wooden Canoe Builders Guild. They run a cooperate materials purchase group (to get group rates on material buying ). Each member is an independent business. Try Roger Foster at Carlisle canoes in Freelton (half way between Guleph and Burlington Ont ) . He is about 3 hours drive from Windsor. His phone number is on the link. good luck
