I suggest that you rent different canoes all summer long. Start with a Prospector style, 15 feet, in Kevlar. Take notes. Then change constructor, lenght, style. Rent a true solo canoe. Check what other boats are floating around on the lakes/rivers that you like to paddle.

The fun about waiting in the fall to buy is that most outfitters sell their fleet and you will have a good price on a boat that you really like. Some outdoor stores will deduct the cost of rentals to the purchase of a new boat. Sail has nice "no tax" events once in a while, too.
