Always 2 paddles (3 when paddle tandem), one straight and one bent-shaft for same reason as littleredcanoe. Last year my paddle broke on the 2nd day of a trip, for no obvious reason. I wonder how many hours it would take me to negotiate remaining 5 or so kilometers of a tiny river overgrown with alder, to the nearest portage, if I didn't have a spare. It would be even more interesting in the middle of a windy lake.

Enjoy your trip, Dave. I'll be doing my first solo next month.

I have a question as well. My canoe has a removable yoke. What do I do with it when its not being used? I don't like the idea of it just rattling around on the bottom of the canoe.

It floats. I just put it up front where it is blocked in by the 30 liter barrel
I'll be doing my thirtieth or so solo but the first post chemo
It'll be good to be out there again
