Post subject:  Whitewater canoe with sit-on-top thigh straps. Possible?

Has anyone added a foot bar or foot pegs to a solo canoe they use for whitewater along with thigh straps similar to what is used on whitewater sit-on-tops? I'm thinking this could increase control for those who have difficulty kneeling in their canoe when in whitewater. Is it possible? Useful?

Thigh straps while kneeling allows for relatively easy exit during an upset. My first thought on your suggested set up would difficult exist/entrapment during an upset.

Foot brace is common for flat water canoe racing.

I could see it being beneficial for moving water canoeing if the paddler can’t kneel.

Not sure how safe thigh straps would be from a sitting position. But you could look out kayaking outfitting—and do thigh braces in combination with a foot brace.

Have you tried wet exiting from a sit on top?

Depending on the width of your boat, I would think some well placed and carved side knee pads (with foot pegs of course) would give you a lot of control from a sitting position.

It sure would be interesting to see if anyone has tried either kayak knee braces or carved knee pads. So many of us are wanting to stay with canoeing whitewater but find kneeling increasingly painful. Myself included.

I personally haven't used a sit-on-top. It would be interesting to know whether any of the sit-on-top whitewater or surf kayakers using these thigh braces have encountered entrapment issues too.

I didn't know about the cboat website. Thank you.

I use a board as a footrest attached to thwart and it does add to being to put a lot more energy into the paddle stroke.
I just happened that the board fit perfect for my foot and leg length with a similar angle to the sprint kayaks I use to paddle.
If that had not worked it would have been foot pegs for sure there is a variety out there.
I agree with DougB on thigh straps over top and possible entrapment.
I to can knowlonger kneel for very long, even with an all year long stretching program. but it does make it eaiser for when I have to.
Sitting Class I and some easy Class II is not a problem, a lot will depend on your type of boat.
For play moves or very techinical II's and III's I kneel with thigh straps.
