Post subject:  Attach camera/GoPro to canoe with North Water skirt

I just got a beautiful North Water Skirt for my Clipper Tripper canoe. Previously, I made a device to hold my camera to the stern thwart ( a steel gooseneck welded to a steel clip) Without the skirt, the system works fine. With the skirt on, there is nowhere to attach the clip.

Any ideas?

thx.

Hi Jeffski.

I have a North Water skirt (with laces) and ran into the same issue.

I attached a GoPro mount to one end of a 3"x0.5"x24" pine board. I then drilled a pair of holes near each end of the board. This allows me to tie the board across the gunnels of the skirted canoe, near the bow or stern, using the lacing of the skirt as tie-in points. This provides a low profile camera perspective that so far has survived my many whitewater wipe outs. GoPro mounts are more fragile, however. For this reason I also attach the camera to the lacing with a short loop of rope (100 lb test) so that if the mount breaks, I will not lose my camera. This has happened a couple of times (!) and it works.

I have a couple of videos that were taken using this method of mounting.

Hi Jeffski, managed to find a photo!

The thin string is the leash for the camera, which feeds through the hinge of the waterproof casing. The thicker string is used to lash the board onto the lacing (a second string is used to lash the other end of the board).

On flatwater trips I would be tempted to use a longer board to get a better offside view of the boat.

Hi MartinG,

It's a Novacraft Supernova.

Excellent. I'm encouraged that the tied cord is enough to keep the board steady.
