Hi Martin, I used this rig to drive up to Killarney. It was very stable, even at 110 km/hr.

That sounds interesting. PICS!?!

Apologies Martin, the rack is buried under the cottage and I'm too lazy to crawl under to drag it out!

It roughly looks like this:

Nice solution Swampwalker! I sure marked up my old Subaru cross bars with the U bolts I used for 2x4s.

I simply duct tape a couple of 1.5" square HSS sections to my rack and it works great.

Turning around on roads like that is when you bless the Roof Rack Gods that you are not towing even a small boat trailer.

Anybody got a good solution for cartopping two canoes on a 2019 Outback with factory rails?

I just took a look at my 2015 Outbacks factory rails. I took a torx #25 tool bit and removed the front cross bar. That left me with a substantial threaded hole that could be used to bolt in fabricated home built tower. Right next to that I used a Torx#30 tool bit to remove the two bolts securing the strap tie down bracket. Removing the bracket exposes two more substantial threaded holes into the base of the factory side rails. I feel this is where you should start on building a home built canoe rack for the latest version of Outback.
