Does anyone know any current information on the water quality of the Lower Spanish River in Ontario. The LSR is the 52 km stretch from Espanola to the North Channel. I haven't found any recent info. Just curious.
Thanks

There is a fairly active community association in that area and they have some info on their website:

Why are you asking - i.e. should I be worried?

No need to worry Erhard.
I've been looking at buying a property along the Lower Spanish River. I'm getting extremely mixed opinions of the water quality. Some say it's totally safe, while others say they wouldn't even think about swimming in it. I've been on the Firends .... site. All that I've found is that it's an area in recovery, that's had very positive improvements. It still needs work & time for nature to recover. That doesn't tell me a whole bunch about the current state.
Just wondering how safe it is to swim or fish in. You guys seem to stay current on this stuff. Just thought I'd ask.

I just came off the upper Spanish, asked questions from a lot of people. The old phone number for inflow is still active but you need to call the second number and talk to the guy controlling the dams. I got a letter from Vale that was dated August 26, 2010 , to Cottagers and concerned residents of Agnew Lake. The MNR has declared a level 1 Low water condition, also they have been continuously oxygenating the water since July 28. I was told that over a meeting between Domtar, MNR, Inco and the residents that they are supplementing the flow to Agnew lake with a total of 400CFS. I can tell you that the water coming down the Spanish is around 125 to 150 cubic feet per second. They are getting water from Onaping Lake, however they were advised to stop this. If you want to talk to these people or get a copy, the number 705-222-8253, the manager of Ontario operations is Angie Robson.
