MNR has posted a proposal to renew the 303 private cottage leases in Algonquin Park for 21 years. There is a 45 day period for commenting on the proposal.

Everyone should get their comments in in the next 45 days. The 303 leaseholders have obviously made their views known on the issue. As a provincial park the rest of us should make our views known.

The link below provides the proposal and the contact to send comments to. I would also recommend sending comments to your local MP as well as the minister and opposition critics.

Legislative contacts:
MNR minister

NDP contact ( NDP MNR critic Sarah Campbell referred me to Gilles Bisson due to a conflict of interest)

PC MNR critic

From what I understand, in 1954 the park was given a new mandate based on wilderness values and a return to its natural state. The cottage lease arrangement was to be temporary measure, with the ultimate goal of eliminating private dwellings in the park. Well here we are in 2012. Algonquin is still being logged, and the cottage issue remains. I've submitted my comments to the MNR.

I've done my part. It only takes a few minutes.
