Hiya, folks!

Since you heard from me last I've been working on a big campaign to help save Temagami's Solace Wildlands.

The Friends of Temagami are opposing construction of the Turner Road through the Solace Wildlands. The Wildlands are a roadless, virgin forest corridor of canoe routes linking the Pinetorch Conservation Reserve, Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park, Solace Provincial Park and the Sturgeon River Provincial Park.

The Solace Wildlands is a Crown Land area of roughly 100 square kilometres right smack in the middle of Temagami's other protected areas. Gervais Forest Products Ltd. under the direction of Vermilion Forest Management have already begun construction of a 25 kilometre-long, kilometre-wide primary logging road corridor beginning from Twinkle Lake Road. This road is a last resort for VFM after proposed bridges over the Sturgeon River were denied three times. There are no allocated cut blocks in the Solace Wildlands area and the Forest Management Planning process for 2020-2030 is only just beginning.

The MNRF approved the Turner Road in 2009 for the 2010-2020 FMP. Construction only began a month ago. Again, there are NO ALLOCATED CUT BLOCKS in the Solace Wildlands.

Please consider signing and sharing our petition.

The petition can be found at http://www.bit.ly/solacepetition

Thank you!

Signed. Although I've never been to Solace, its on my bucket list and I want it to stay as pristine as possible until well after I've seen it. Hopefully this petition can change things.

Thank you, dadadrop!

I truly hope you'll get to see the Solace Wildlands as they are now - intact, rugged, remote, and wild!

Signed as well.

I've paddle through Solace a number of times the last few years - it is beautiful, wild and rugged country. I also enjoy paddling through the area and have found myself heading that way more often than not lately.

Good luck on the campaign and I'll be actively following along.

Thanks for your support, brunettejamie and Mike N. !

brunettejamie... if you have any photos or videos of the Wildlands you'd be willing to share with us for use in social media posts, please send them to me at tierneyangus @ friendsoftemagami.org. You'll be given full credit, of course.

Great job Tierney & co. Thanks so much for all your work on this.

Assuming that you have GIS/mapping support already given the FOT maps, but if not---and if you need maps for your meetings with MNRF and VFM---just holler and I'll do my best to help.

Jon

I'll see if I can dig up any photos from the area and share.

Thanks.

Thanks so much for your support, everyone!

We're at 4000+ signatures in four days! Exciting.

Jonathan Kelly: Yes, we have GIS mapping info but we're looking to create an Avenza version... once our mapmaker locates the file for version 3 :o

We should have some updates about next steps very soon. We have a maintenance trip planned through the area in mid-May and I'm hoping to put together a short documentary about it.

I just signed lastnight and it was well over 7000, although my computer kept glitching so not sure what the number is at now.

Question: Is that correct that the road will be 1km wide??? That would be wider than the 401....
