Specifics on what lands and waters will be protected aren't all in, there will be camping school for kids and low-income families will get four free days in some national and provincial parks.

Nice. I admire the initiative and being in the states I'm jealous. Seems like someone could have given him a Canadian canoe to paddle!

Hmm, my Pelican kayak is made out of Ram-X. Is pelican and coleman the same company? I'm not too proud to paddle Ram-X, so I won't hold it against a prime minister.

However, I would like to see us adopting a slightly different terminology each election cycle. I think of these pronouncements more as predictions than promises.

A little more information here... it's actually 25% of land area and 25% of ocean area to be protected which is more than I thought originally.

Although sending low income families off to camp may be well intentioned, there is only so much money to go around. I really think that these $$'s would be better spent by ensuring every remote First Nation community has clean drinking water. These communities experience "camp-like" conditions every single day. I have to question young Trudeau's priorities on this one.

The money will go wherever the liberals believe they will get the most votes from it. Or better yet, this is nothing more than an election promise that won't get fulfilled. I can't believe I'm so negative, or wait a minute I do actually know why.

The picture of him in a canoe reminds me of the pics I used to see of his dad out soloing. Too bad that he's not his dad. What's the saying "an apple never falls from the tree". In this case I guess the apple fell, rotted on the ground, got harvested by a Mexican picker and then squeezed into bad cider.

JF, some spending numbers on these issues, if it helps any...

$75,000,000 in new spending for the above measures - natural areas protection, boost kids' camping.
$4,500,000,000 in new spending for indigenous services.

PS... AFAIK none of the other parties have made any big promises to increase protection of natural areas. More significantly, none of their leaders have been seen paddling canoes. Maybe it's just too hard to find blue, orange and green canoes... dunno. But the big cities are where the votes are and maybe dragging a canoe around while campaigning just doesn't look cool.

Apparently, this promise would cost $75 million in 2020-21, and rise to $150 million by 2023-24. Protection of natural areas is one thing. Spending money frivolously on this sort of stuff is another. Rather than the shotgun approach of election promises, I would much rather see a much more extremely focused target on the remote reserves. Putting the $4.5B up against the $75M as justification doesn't cut it in my book. There should be some measures taken to control the deficit. There is also the argument to be made that low income families might prefer to decide where to spend the money other than camping, if it was available and they had an option.

I think that getting more young people involved in camping is essential to ecological preservation in this country, especially as we become increasingly multi-cultural. If you've never spent much of any time in high quality natural areas its hard to appreciate and hence understand why preservation is important.

Land and water protection also has a strong business case to go with it, that often gets overlooked. as the rest of the world becomes overpopulated and paved-over/polluted, and as the global middle class increases in size, high quality natural areas will be very valuable for ecotourism and Canada is poised to be a leader in this respect.

JF, I am with macT on this issue... spending money on natural areas protection will encourage business growth in tourism, and there's money to be made in tourism. Growth in tourism has resulted in sales and profits now surpassing those from the resource sector, with the exception of oil and gas. Ignoring that kind of growth potential means more long-term poverty for indigenous communities down the road, when instead business opportunities should be encouraged.

The numbers I provided are one-year funds only... the $4.5 billion is the funding currently being spent for indigenous services in 2019, and provides some reference for the sake of comparison.

Some money will always need to be spent on natural areas protection... $75 million during one year isn't that much spread over the entire nation. In Ontario, over $100 million was spent in one year, in Ontario getting the Living Legacy initiative going.

I am sure that if asked the low income families would rather spend that $2000 on other things like food and clothing, rather than being forced to go camping. It will be interesting to see the qualifying criteria, lets hop eit is less discriminatory than the summer student work grant.
Nothing more than another 150 million added to to the already 10's of billions promised (90% of which is going to non Canadian nations ?!). All going to the deficit, yet not a single word mentioned for how he plans on paying any of the debt or event the staggering interest. Know why? because he doesn't plan on repaying it, socialist parties never do, just tax and spend. Its easy to promise and spend other people hard earned money!

Just think what a 60+ billion dollars could have done for Canadians, like drinking water and decent living conditions and education for indigenous peoples, land preservation, innovation for companies/industry to reduce waste and land fill instead of thinking a tax will control mother nature. Benefits for veterans, job and training programs; hell, you could even provide free tuition for students with that much cash, I could go on all day listing items that would truly benefit the people of this land.

All smoke and mirrors and vote buying at the expense of the hard working tax payer. but that's OK, there will be tax invented to fix that too I imagine

That's the end of my rant.. now back to canoeing while I can still afford it. :D

For the love of myccr, let's just pretend this thread never happened. Posting links to news articles is great, but let's leave the political debating/ranting to literally every other corner of the internet, please!

Well. this is the environmental issues forum... aren't most environmental issues political?

Here's a cartoon from Alberta which also happens to include a canoe. No offense, well done and funny.

We can discuss environmental issues, even ones relating to election promises, without ranting about "socialists" and "non-Canadians" stealing our "hard-earned tax dollars". Let's hold myccr to a higher standard than the rest of the internet.
