View topic - Avenza Maps tutorials

Thx, guys.

I did a bit of poking around with it. I found n earlier version that was for Android and a version for Windows, but nothing for IOS. I tried the Windows version just to get feel for how Avenza works. It looked like I could downlload a lots of maps for my area (cycling trails etc). Some were free, some not. I did find 1 topo but looking around the map for other topo maps was futile. I tried a name search as well, no luck.

Wotrock, I'm getting both the Toporama and the CanTopo top maps in the Avenza search page... the CanTopo version should be the higher quality map. Plus a lot bike trail maps and others like you described. This is on the search page link from the map store page by clicking "online".... this is what appeared after typing in "wasaga", then clicking on the Ontario location that pops up.

News... it turns out that top maps will download and can be stored on a PC, but only with Windows 10... my earlier comment that maps can't be stored applies to mobile devices, it seems that the maps can't be stored on a SD card inside a phone, only on a phone's internal storage so if the battery goes dead or is taken out, the maps might disappear (I haven't done this to check).

Here's the PC viewer page along with additional info links, to view and download Avenza maps on a desktop or tablet. Once you have the viewer, it should be listed in programs on your PC, opening it should provide a look at the top maps that were downloaded and stored. Hope it works, finding the link to the PC viewer at the Avenza website wasn't all that apparent. And it's no longer supported it seems, so might be buggy or not available later on.

I whipped off an e-mail to Avenza ad got this prompt response---It looks like I am SOL!

"Unfortunately, the newest version of the application is only supported on devices running iOS 11 or higher. The version of the application that Apple makes available in the App Store will not be supported on any device running iOS 10 or lower. It is entirely up to Apple what versions of the app they choose to make available, but I would like to direct you to this article on how to download an older version of the app that cannot run iOS 11, here.

The method in the article is only if you previously downloaded the app on that specific device or with your specific Apple ID as it requires you to access the older version of the app from your previously “Purchased” apps tab. Unfortunately, there is no other way that I know of to get access to an older version of the app for iOS so you may be unable to use it on your particular device. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

OK, so I now have an android phone and have installed the Avenza app. I can search for topos by name but the index on line shows by map #s e.g. 31D5. Is there another index by name?? thx

This page will probably first search using your IP address or maybe GPS location so nearby area maps will appear... enter another location and it should search for maps there with area covered, cost/free, sample pix... hit free or price to download into your phone or computer.

Thx---yes, I scrolled around the maps a bit and after some trial and error I could find some of the topos I wanted. Bit of a guessing game . Like turning over rocks to see what's underneath. I get about 3 red 'dots' in an area-2 are for some local trail or town map but 'rock #3' has the topo hidden underneath!!

I finally got an Iphone that can use Avenza. So I downloaded the app and, following prompts and a few instructions, a couple of relevant topos. I checked the various on-line instruction but did not see anything on how to 'put it in gear',start it and have it show my location on a topo. I would have thought that would have been Step 1 in the instructions, but I guess not.

Your location should show automatically as long as you have GPS turned on on your phone...and assuming that you downloaded a topo that you're actually within. On the home screen where it shows your maps, it'll say "On map" below the title of the map if you're within the extent of the map.

The map has to be georeferenced, but assuming that you downloaded the topos from the Avenza store, that wouldn't be the problem.

Beyond that, once you open a map, you pull up the bar at the bottom for more options (at least on Android) such as tracking.

If nothing else, restart your phone lol.

i used avenza a lot and it served me well. but starting last year the app keeps saying it cant find my location and check that location is turned on, on my phone. well its always on lol. then i noticed that my location icon is only on when i use google maps, so i lost the ability to use avenza. one day ill investigate more, having maps from jeff and jonathan are very helpful and also appreciated.

I got it started and performing the basic functions. I had been using one of the other apps(Cantopo). The main reason for trying Avenza was to get Sat Pix. Apparently that is possible but trying to follow the instructions from Av is quite complicated for me---a bit beyond my limited computer skills. I had hoped I could maybe import chunks from GE or possibly CalTopo using their 'Print/PDF'function but apparently not.

I know your Nog map is quite good but we have been to that area and have no plans to go back---nothing to do with the area as such. It's quite nice in there, IMO.
