This winter one of my projects is to make a new pair of snowshoes. I would be interested in hearing the opinions of folks on the different materials available for the lacing. Perhaps even some input on where to locate the different materials.

    Rawhide
    Nylon lacing
    Parachute cord
    Monofilament

Perhaps there are other materials that you have used and would be willing to warn against or encourage the use of. Any special tricks for working with the various materials?

Thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing your responses.

Good evening Grey owl,

Glad to hear that you’re thinking of making your own snowshoes. I made my own last summer and really enjoyed the process. You can read about it on my blog http://www.wildpaddler.ca/2010/09/wheres-snow.html. I used 3/8” nylon webbing to fill the main body and 1/8” braided nylon cord for the toe and heel with good results. If you are using the 1/8” cord be sure to get the woven stuff and not the twisted, the later will just come apart. The webbing is very strong, stretches very little, is durable, and is easy to work with. I purchased a role from Country Ways. http://snowshoe.com/index.cfm?pageid=60&productid=TD#TD

Good luck with your build

Mark

I came across this website that I saw advertising in my local paper. There is a listing for rawhide under "Laces" but it only seems to come in colours at 40 ft pieces. You may be able to email questions to them for clarification on the usage or if they have other products for your snowshoe project.
