Ravens will spend time at play (at least my interpretation of their behaviour is play)... there were several ravens playing around riding slope lift in the wind as it was deflected upwards by a cliff. They seemed to be playing catch with a twig... one raven held the twig in it's beak while gliding upward in circles, then dropped it. Then another raven would dive down and catch the falling twig before it hit the ground.... then ride the slope lift up once more, where it dropped the twig for another raven to dive down and catch. This playtime went on for several minutes, until they seem to get tired of it and flew off.

Ravens had a reputation as a supernatural bird with some native cultures, IIRC... they're said to be capable of mimicking non-raven sounds, including human voices. Once I thought I heard something like a human voice calling on a lake... it turned out to be a raven.

First really good observation of ruddy ducks in this area... often difficult to see because they will stay well offshore and away from anything else out in the open water.

Even though the birds were still about 100m distant, first impression was the striking metallic color reflecting sunlight... male, metallic rusty red... female, metallic tan.

Cornell U (allaboutbirds.com) describes them as "gleaming"... none of the google photos matched the iridescent metallic colors very well, this is the closest I could find.

Yesterday, up here in T-Bay an Indigo Bunting! Many many >new< visitors. Goldfinches aplenty, yellow rumped warblers to mention a few and of course the Bald Eagles on the Kaministiqua River . . . in the back yard ;)

Got in trouble. Moved the suet feeder and replaced it with hummingbird feeder.

a hairy woodpecker was not amused when his usual meal area was set differently. The suet bag is now 20 feet away.

I don't have a Bald Eagle at the feeder.. Its probably scouting the prospects for baby loon on the island in front of my house.

Phoebes are feeding on various flying insects and maybe as a result there are not a lot of mosquitoes and other biting insects... this year's nest.
